Between 1709 and 1914, hundreds of thousands of people left their
home towns in Baden and emigrated overseas, most of them to America.
Today many of their descendants are searching for these places of
origin, in order to visit them and to trace their ancestry further
back by using German sources.
Before beginning research in Germany, one must know the emigrant's
exact place of origin. Only then can one use parish registers and
public administrational records as sources for further genealogical
research.
Whether you know the exact place of origin of your ancestor or not,
let our 25-years' professional genealogical experience in the archives
and parish offices of Baden help meet your genealogical needs!
A. Baden Emigration Research
Often American sources do not give the name of the town in Baden where
an emigrant came from (or just refer to Baden-Baden which means the
country of Baden rather than the city by this name). In this event, our
Baden Emigration Research Service may be able to locate the exact place
of origin for you and thus make further research possible.
Depending on the period of emigration we primarily consult the folllo-
wing sources:
1709-1814 Published lists of emigrants; the censuses of 1709, 1738,
and 1765; summonses for missing persons in newspapers (be-
ginning in the late 1700s); church records of assumed places
of origin; and (if the surname is not too common) books and
card files that indicate where a certain surname occurred
at a given time.
1815-1870 The censuses of 1811 and 1818; the emigration permits in the
Karlsruhe and Freiburg State Archives; the file of partici-
pants in the revolution of 1849; church and vital records of
assumed places of origin; the Germanic Emigrants Register;
and most important of all our files of more than 100,000
entries on emigrants for the period 1815 to 1873 (regularly
being added to).
1866-1911 The annual lists of emigrants prepared for the Baden Bureau
of Statistics (located in the Karlsruhe State Archives); and
the records quoted before.
There is no risk to our Baden Emigration Research Service. Instead of
spending money on research which might not be successful, you only pay
for the results! That is an offer you can't afford to turn down.
The rates for finding the unknown place of origin of an emigrant are
as follows:
(1) emigration years 1709-1814 send details and inquire
(2) emigration years 1815-1911
if found by using Germanic Emigrants Register Euro 200
if found by using other sources Euro 160
this prince includes
(a) a reproduction, transcript and English summary of the emigrant's
birth or marriage entry,
(b) a copy and English summary of the emigration papers (if avai-
lable),
(c) a reproduction and English summary of the newspaper advertise-
ment indicating the emigration (only if available and not in-
cluded in (b)),
(d) a detailed topographic map (scale 1:50,000) of the area where
the emigrant was from.
Clients living in the Common Market, please add regular sales tax
(currently 16 per cent) to the prices quoted above.
Because the investment of time, effort and skill in our research is
substantial for every case, we request your assurance in advance that
you agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of our standard
contract, as stated below. Please indicate your agreement by printing
out the Emigration Research Service Form, filling and signing it, and
send in the form by mail.
Research is offered on the following conditions:
1. If the place of origin is found and can be proven by a certificate,
then the client pays the fee of Euro 200 or Euro 160 (depending on
the means by which the result was achieved). No fee is charged if
the place of origin is not established and proven.
2. The amount is the same whether the place of origin has been proven
for a single emigrant or a group of emigrants (married couple,
family, or just friends) who came from the same place (even if they
left at different times). However the fee includes items A(2)(a-c)
for only one emigrant or one emigrant's family.
3. If the origin of a married couple is found but husband and wife
came from two different locations and did not marry at one of those
locations, then the quoted charge applies to each of these persons,
because each will have required the research time, effort, and skill
to deal with an entirely different case of emigration.
4. The quoted fee is due when searching for an emigrant who left Baden
between 1815 and 1911. For any emigration prior to 1815, the contract
is valid in the same way but the quoted fee is to be replaced by a
fee to be agreed upon the individual case.
5. When the report, including the documents listed under A(2)(a-c) is
ready for mailing, we will send you a notice to that effect, and a
bill calling for payment in Euro or US Dollars of whatever fee was
agreed upon. When we receive your payment, we will forward the report
and the supporting documents to you. The map will be sent separately
at book rate.
6. You have the opportunity to cancel this contract any time before we
mail a notice to you that our report is ready, but not within one
year after signing the contract. To cancel, send a registered letter
(certified mail does not go to Germany), with a postmark dated
earlier than the postmark of our notice.

A. Wuerttemberg Emigration Research
Often American sources do not give the name of the town in Wuerttemberg

and central administration offices; church records of assumed
places of origin; probate records; the Germanic Emigrants
Register; and (if the surname is not too common) books and
card files that indicate where a certain surname occurred at
a given time.
1815-1870 Published lists of emigrants (such as the Wuerttemberg Emi-
gration Index, the Glatzle collection); emigration permits
at the Ludwigsburg and Sigmaringen State Archives; the emi-
gration records in the Stuttgart State Archives; emigration
announcements in local and statewide newspapers; military
conscription records; church and vital records of the assumed
places of origin; and the Germanic Emigrants Register.

emigration entries in the records of the province governments
